Auditions for this prestigious event started in Harare last Saturday, and will move on to other provinces as the event gathers momentum in preparation for the grand finale to be held in Lusaka, Zambia in November.
However, before going for the finals, finalists, who will be drawn from the country’s 10 provinces will have to battle for honours at the Miss Southern Africa Zimbabwe pageant to be held on September 28, in Bulawayo.
The lucky lady will then represent Zimbabwe in Lusaka.
In an interview from his UK base, the director of the pageant, Washington Ali said the regional event was aimed at promoting Southern Africa’s cultural diversity.
“Miss Southern Africa is an event that has grown to an international brand and aims to bring contestants from
all the 15 Southern African countries and islands together to celebrate the people of Southern Africa.
“Their amazing culture, food, the colourful and vibrant fashions, its many tribes, natural wonders, rivers, springs and waterfalls, different foods and rich cultural traditions, its expressive and emotive music and the fantastic beautiful talent of its women, is what makes this event unique,” he said.
Ali added that the pageant will also open up a number of opportunities for the girls who would have excelled in the finals.
“There are further opportunities for the winner and other finalists to represent Zimbabwe at International stages.
“One good example is that of the former Miss Zimbabwe Malaika Mushandu, who had an opportunity to take part in the Top Model of the World 2012 and was voted the first princess,” he said.
The pageant started in 2010 and some of its beauty queens have gone on to excel in other international pageants.
The reigning Miss Southern Africa is Zambian model Percivia Mulenga Chimfwembe.
The pageant is also aimed at promoting the region’s tourism destinations.
