THE Zimbabwe Unity and Sanctions Relief Initiative (Zusri) is pleading with the citizens of Zimbabwe to sign petitions that are appealing to the governments of the United Kingdom, the United States of America as well as countries in the European Union to repeal sanctions imposed on the country.
Zusri was launched last week on Friday in Harare and is being spearheaded by the Faith of the Nation Campaign led by Reverend Andrew Wutawunashe who partnered with National Elders Forum headed by Rev Felix Mukonowengwe. The project seeks to lobby and appeal to the Western countries to remove sanctions affecting the country.
In his address at a meeting in Bulawayo yesterday, Rev Wutawunashe said people have to unite, come together and sign the petitions in a bid to appeal to the Western powers to remove the sanctions.
“We are calling upon people to sign the petition which we intend to take to the Western powers such as the US, UK and the European Union to say the nation’s poor have borne the yoke of sanctions for the best part of two decades. The Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (Zdera) is an unjust heavy burden, yoke and instrument of impoverishment, oppression and suffering mainly upon the innocent poor people of Zimbabwe and may they be repealed. We are calling upon all citizens, churches, national elders, prominent people, compassionate organisations, entire political class in Zimbabwe, all politicians and political parties whether home or in the Diaspora to unite in calling for the withdrawal of all forms of sanctions on our nation,” he said.
The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) vice-president Mr Golden Muoni said all businesses should support the cause in order to revive the economy.
In his remarks at the meeting, Chief Dumisani Basil Ndondo of Mbembesi said ZUSRI was in line with the Government’s economic Vision 2030.
