MANICALAND is set to witness significant transformation of its key tourism infrastructure, with major facelift earmarked for the Grand Reef Aerodrome, Mutare Flyover, Hot Springs and Mutare Sports Club, among other notable attractions, ahead of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo scheduled for September 10 to 12.

Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbara Rwodzi on Monday toured Grand Reef Aerodrome where she announced plans for a runway extension to accommodate 50-seater planes.

The extension will greatly enhance the aerodrome’s capacity, facilitating increased air traffic and boosting tourism in the province.

With the ability to accommodate larger planes, Grand Reef Aerodrome will become a more attractive destination for airlines, tourists and investors; driving economic growth and development in Manicaland.

Work on the expansion of the aerodrome is expected to start soon.

Minister Rwodzi also said that Government, in partnership with a local mining company, is undertaking a major upgrade of Hot Springs Resort in Chimanimani District, which is expected to be a flagship legacy project for the Expo, driving long-term tourism growth and economic development in the province.

For years, Hot Springs Resort has been overlooked, its full potential remaining untapped.

However, with the impending upgrade, its sprucing up is finally on the horizon.

The Hot Springs site holds special significance, with each coin tossed into its waters telling a story of the faith and devotion people have in this unique place.

As an iconic tourism site, it deserves more attention and investment, paving the way for a brighter future.

“We are excited that this iconic tourism site, long known for its natural and spiritual value, will now be getting the infrastructure it deserves. Through partnership with the private sector, Hot Springs will be transformed into a wellness and cultural sanctuary that attracts both domestic and international visitors.

This development will include modern amenities, eco-conscious architectural designs and wellness facilities making it a premium destination for healing, relaxation and spiritual retreats,” said Minister Rwodzi.

Minister Rwodzi also engaged with a diverse range of stakeholders in Mutare, including hoteliers, tour operators, local authorities, retailers, informal traders, and Government officials, focusing on aligning efforts to enhance the city’s appeal and readiness to host international and local guests.

To support the Expo’s success, the ministry is upgrading key infrastructure in Mutare, including roads leading to prominent tourism sites like Grand Reef Aerodrome, Mutare Fly Over and public amenities like Mutare Sports Club to ensure seamless accessibility and memorable experience for visitors.

During the interactive session, stakeholders raised concerns over the congestion of key areas in Mutare, particularly the notorious Mutare Fly Over in the downtown area of the city. To address this, plans are underway to rehabilitate the area and ease traffic congestion.

Mutare Sports Club is already undergoing significant transformation, with substantial portions of the facility being demolished or extensively rehabilitated. Minister Rwodzi’s visit to the site revealed notable progress, with some buildings already 60 percent complete.

Minister Rwodzi urged local people to make a lasting impression on the over 400 expected exhibitors, buyers, investors and service providers from around the world.

She emphasised that the Expo will be a game-changer, especially for small and medium enterprises, that will have the opportunity to showcase their products and services alongside established businesses.

Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution Advocate Misheck Mugadza said: “This is Manicaland’s moment to shine. The business community and stakeholders are enthusiastic and ready to tap into the vast opportunities this mega event will bring.

“Our province boasts unique tourism attractions and resilient businesses, and this is our chance to showcase what Manicaland has to offer.”

Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe national president, Mr Brian Nyakutombwa, commended Government for engaging with the tourism and business community in Manicaland.

“We appreciate your efforts to meet with us as hosts.

“This awareness initiative is crucial and we must capitalise on this opportunity, which is a first for Manicaland. I am confident that we will rise to the occasion and proudly showcase our province. The impressive renovations at Mutare Sports Club demonstrate Government’s commitment, and now it is our responsibility as the Manicaland business community to step up,” said Mr Nyakutombwa.
