HOCKEY Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) secretary general Sarah Bennett’s profile continues to grow, and she is now part of the technical panel for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations due to take place next month in Egypt.
Bennett has been appointed as the African Hockey Federation (AfHF) representative at the continental show-piece that will feature men’s and women’s teams from the October 11 to 18 tournament.
She was recently appointed onto the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Competitions Committee.
“I am truly humbled and honoured to be appointed as the Africa Hockey Representative for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations and also to have recently joined the FIH Competitions Committee.
“These opportunities mean so much to me — not only as recognition, but as a chance to give back to the sport that has shaped my journey and continues to inspire me every day,” said Bennett.
Bennett has previously been appointed to various capacities in other major competitions, including the Paris 2024 Olympic Games where she was one of the technical officials. It was her second time attending the Olympics as an official after attending Tokyo 2020 Games.
Bennett is the only Zimbabwean on the panel and will be joined by officials from South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, Nigeria, the Netherlands, Zambia, Pakistan and Malaysia.
“I am excited to work with fellow colleagues and the hockey family across Africa and beyond, as we grow the game, create new opportunities and showcase the talent and passion that make hockey so special.
“My main responsibilities will be to act as a vital link between the officials, participating teams and the Africa Hockey executive.
“I will also be providing support and guidance to the appointed technical delegates where needed and ensuring that the tournament is delivered to the highest standard.”
Unfortunately, Zimbabwe are not going to field teams for the tournament.
“It is unfortunate that the Zimbabwe ladies will not be participating in this year’s tournament, which also serves as a World Cup qualifier, despite having earned their place.
“Financial challenges, compounded by the fact that several players are also committed to the Junior World Cup in December, have sadly prevented their involvement,” said Bennett.
Currently, the national association is struggling to raise funds for the Under-21 women’s team that qualified for the FIH Women’s Junior World Cup to be staged in Chile from December 1 to 13.
Zimbabwe qualified for the tournament after finishing third at the Junior Africa Cup in April, in Namibia.
However, their participation is surrounded by uncertainty due to financial constraints.
Bennett said the projected budget is currently estimated at between US$180 000 and US$200 000.
“We are, however, in the process of reviewing and identifying areas where potential cost reductions can be achieved.
“At this stage, the most critical expenses requiring urgent attention are accommodation and airfares, as these are fundamental to enabling participation,” said Bennett.
For the first time, the Junior World Cup will feature 24 teams. Previously it was a 16-team tournament.
The 24 teams were drawn into six pools of four teams. Zimbabwe are in Pool B where they will face Argentina, Belgium and Wales.
