The Rhodesia Herald,
March 23, 1978
MS Edith Penelope (Penny) Cockburn (61), who died in a motor accident on Tuesday near the turn-off to Digglefold School, Marandellas, had been matron at the school for 13 years.
A colleague said she was well loved by both parents and children at the school, where she had looked after the children in Winchester House.
She was “an extremely kind person who loved to help whenever she could”.
Ms Cockburn was described by friends as being a retiring person who rarely spoke about herself.
She was born in Kashmir and travelled widely before arriving in Rhodesia in the 1950s, becoming matron at various schools in the country.
Ms Cockburn has a great niece in Salisbury. It is not known if she had any other relatives.
LESSONS FOR TODAY
When someone does something wholeheartedly, their legacy will endure even after they are gone.
Dedication to one’s work is a virtue that not all people possess. It takes passion and courage for one to stay in one place for a very long time.
It is always good to strive to be kind to everyone so that people will have nice things to say about you when you are gone.
It is good to open up about yourself so that people will know who to consult in the event of an emergency.
