SCHOOLS can play a critical role in fighting drug and substance abuse, Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Deputy Minister Tino Machakaire has said.
He was speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Johanne Marange’s St John’s Primary and Secondary schools in Macheke.
Deputy Minister Machakaire said the rise in drug abuse among youths is a threat to the development of the country.
“There is an upsurge of drug and substance abuse, especially by young people in our communities, and this is derailing development. However, I am happy the church is taking upon itself to impart knowledge to our children on the effects of abusing drugs,” he said.
He said learning institutions provide an environment for children to be groomed to desist from drug abuse.
“I urge parents to report these (drug abuse) cases to law-enforcement agencies to nip the problem in the bud. Assisting children and giving them education and keeping them occupied will help them to be focused and avoid illegal activities. I commend the church for what you are doing for the children.
“They say education is the key to success and you have taken it upon yourself to build the future of your children so that they will not spend their time abusing drugs.”
Government recently stepped up the fight against drug abuse by establishing the National Committee on Elimination of Drug and Substance Abuse, with a related police crackdown that is underway. About 6 000 suspects have been arrested so far.
