THE final stage of the Zimbabwe schools rugby selection gets underway at Falcon College this afternoon, with Under-18 coach Godwin Murambiwa saying they will never use the sentimental card in picking the best players.
With six teams set to take part in the inter-provincial tournament in Esigodini, Murambiwa would love to see the players being selected on merit.
The tournament is being used to select the Zimbabwe schools side that will take part at the annual Craven Week Rugby Festival in South Africa in July.
“After getting feedback from the respective provinces at the schools’ annual general meeting, indications were that it is better to play as a province for the duration of the selection period because there is a lot of pride in playing for a province and also for provincial records.
“When provincial teams are picked, coaches work on various combinations, skills and team building efforts in preparation for the national selection and it is such values and technical awareness we also need to uphold.
“We are going to have six teams at the national trials this year, two from Harare, Matabeleland, Country Districts and the Central Region will all have a team each and we will also include the developmental squad that was picked at the Dairibord Schools Rugby festival,” said Mura- mbiwa.
