BULAWAYO Athletics Board (Bab) chairman Emmanuel Mpofu has challenged the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) to introduce athletics clubs in schools.Addressing participants at the four-day Nash basic athletics coaching and officiating workshop at Gifford High School, Mpofu said the association should come up with a programme that would see the clubs competing throughout the year.
The workshop is being attended by teachers and clubs officials from the city and Reigate District. Sport and Recreation Coordinator, Vusumuzi Mlilo is facilitating.
“Most schools participate in athletics during the first term only but our calendar runs from January to December. We want pupils to participate in athletics throughout the year,” said Mpofu.
He said as part of preparations to establish athletics clubs at schools, it was important to train the trainers first.
“It is important to train the trainers first so that when they go back to schools they identify those talented kids that they will work with throughout the year,”
Mpofu said schools should be affiliated to Bab as soon as they form the clubs. Workshop facilitator Mlilo said they have introduced a five-year strategic plan.
“We want to teach trainers not to just assembly teams for competitions but to build teams for the future,” he said.
