FACT: The impact of social media on football has been substantial in recent years!
Social media platforms have revolutionised the way fans engage with the sport, providing instant access to live updates, player news, and behind-the-scenes content.
It does not need any biblical Solomonic Wisdom to say the various ways in which social media has transformed the football industry, from enhancing fan experiences to shaping players’ careers and influencing club branding.
Social media has become an integral part of the football landscape and its profound effects on the sport’s global reach and overall popularity.
One such local football club that seems to have mastered the art of it is Castle Lager Premier Soccer League’s newbies — Scottland FC, who have taken the local football arena by storm.

In their debut season in the country’s elite football league, Scottland have reached far and wide with their replica jerseys selling like hot cakes, thanks to the way how their social media has revolutionised the way fans interact with football, significantly increased fan engagement.
Their platforms such as Facebook, X formerly Twitter, and Instagram have provided fans with a direct line of communication to their favourite football team and players.
Fans can now follow their team’s social media accounts, comment on posts and engage in discussions with fellow fans from all over the world.
“One of the key ways social media has increased fan engagement is through the sharing of multimedia content. Football clubs and players regularly post videos, photos and highlights on their social media accounts, allowing fans to experience the excitement of the game even if they could not attend in person.
“This not only keeps fans connected to their favourite teams but also helps generate a sense of community among supporters,” said one of Scottland’s social media managers Thulani “Javas” Sibanda.
In the past, the chances of having direct interaction with football players were limited to autograph signings or chance encounters.
However, social media has bridged this gap and provided fans with the opportunity to directly interact with their favourite players.
Through platforms like X and Instagram, fans can now send messages, tag players in posts and even receive responses from their idols.
This direct interaction not only makes fans feel closer to the players but also allows players to connect with their supporters at a personal level.
This has humanised football stars and created a sense of mutual appreciation and respect between players and fans.
Much like their Zvishavane-based rivals FC Platinum, Scottland have arrived with mojo in just a few weeks of their colourful existence.
They were formed last year and joined the Zifa Northern Region League in March and went on to win the title and entitlement to play in the Zimbabwe Premiership.
Put simply, its Mabviravira to the World!
True to their statement, just like Bulawayo Chiefs, where Sibanda used to work, to Scottland, social media has really changed the way football clubs and players can enhance their branding and promote themselves to a wider audience with greater visibility and brand presence.
With millions of active users on platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube, football clubs can now directly engage with their fans and create a strong brand image.
This direct interaction helps clubs build a loyal and dedicated fan base, leading to increased brand recognition and loyalty. — @FungaiMuderere
