In his opening remarks at the sixth session of the Zimbabwe-Namibia Joint Commission meeting held in Windhoek, Namibia recently, Minister Mumbengegwi said there should be a provision where members of the UN General Assembly could override decisions of the Security Council.
He said some members of the Security Council were abusing the world body to meet their political and economic interests.
Minister Mumbengegwi cited the case of Libya where some Security Council members under NATO turned the UN Resolution 1973 for a no fly zone to bomb the Libya.
He said war crimes were committed in Libya to fulfill interests of certain countries.
“It is these abuses of the UN institutions that underlines the need for urgent reform of the United Nations, particularly the Security Council. The composition of the Security Council is undemocratic and its working methods are opaque,” he said.
Minister Mumbengegwi said Africa was the biggest single group at the UN and yet it was not among those that wield the veto.
He said it defied logic to say only nine countries could sanction destruction of an African country while 194 members of the General Assembly were against such a resolution.
On bilateral relations between Harare and Windhoek, Minister Mumbengegwi said political relations between the two countries continued to grow.
