Security guard caught with ivory

A CHIPINGE security guard has appeared in court after he was arrested for unlawfully possessing ivory.

Simon Tirivaviri (45), who is employed by Southern Company at Checheche Growth Point, is facing charges of contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act.

Tirivaviri pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mrs Elizabeth Hanzi.

He was denied bail and the matter was deferred to September 16 for trial.

Prosecuting, Mr Edmore Mahlanganise said on August 30, police detectives received information that Tirivaviri was in possession of ivory.

“The detectives called Tirivaviri posing as potential buyers and he agreed to meet them at Mabhiza Business Centre. Tirivaviri proceeded to the place and produced the ivory which was in a big black bag. He said he was selling it for US$1 100,” said Mr Mahlanganise.

Tirivavi was immediately arrested after the detectives identified themselves.
