Security guard loses thumb in fight

A 29-YEAR-OLD man from Mwenezi in Masvingo will spend the next 15 months in prison for biting off a security guard’s thumb following a misunderstanding over $2 change. Lazarus Zvikombarume (29) of Mwenezi Estate pleaded   guilty   to   assaulting   a   security   guard, Mr Abiot Dube during a fight when he appeared before Masvingo magistrate Ms Dorothy Mwanyisa on Monday.
Zvikombarume was convicted and sentenced to 18 months in prison.

There months of the sentence were however suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
For the State, Ms Makaita Chikamhi said on 5 May at about 9pm, Zvikombarume was drinking beer with other patrons at Mwenezana Section 2 Bar.
Zvikombarume bought beer and left $2 change with the barman, Mr Wandai Macheka.

After some time, Zvikombarume went to Macheka for his change but the barman said he did not leave any.
A misunderstanding ensued between the two and Zvikombarume started shoving the barman.

When Mr Dube realised that the barman was being pushed, he stepped in to stop the fight while reassuring Zvikombarume that he would get his change.

Zvikombarume turned on to Mr Dube whom he pushed and grabbed by the neck.
This attracted the attention of another security guard, Mr Tariro Hlupo who also intervened and managed to stop the fight.
On the way home, Zvikombarume attacked Mr Dube and the two men   fell to the ground.

After realising that he was now losing the fight, Zvikombarume bit off a chunk of Dube’s left thumb.
A report was made to the police leading to his arrest.
