A devastating fire that ravaged the Mbare Musika Retail Market last week, resulting in approximately US$5 million in damages, was ignited by a small blaze negligently started by a security guard seeking warmth.
The Mbare Magistrates Court has remanded 35-year-old Action Chakauya on charges of negligently causing serious damage to property.
Chakauya, who was stationed at a premises across the road from the market, lit the fire near one of the market’s main entrances on the evening of Tuesday last week.
According to reports, Chakauya lost control of the flames, which quickly spread and engulfed the entire market. Following an investigation, police arrested him, and he now faces charges under Section 141 of the criminal code.
In light of the disaster, President Mnangagwa has declared the Mbare fire a state of emergency, with plans already in motion to upgrade the market and assist affected traders with restocking their goods.
Despite the destruction, some traders have begun to rebuild their stalls and successfully restock, allowing them to resume operations. (The Herald)
