TWO security guards have landed in serious trouble after turning against their own employer and stealing 61 bags of maize.

Philani Amahlangu (42) from Smith Compound and John Makwature (51) from Njube, who were employed at Sondelani Ranching Private Limited, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate, Barbara Phiri.

The pair was slapped with a 24-month jail sentence after being convicted of theft.

However, part of the sentence was suspended.

Six months were suspended for five years, while the remaining 18 months will be served through 630 hours of community service.

The complainant in the matter is Sondelani Ranching, represented by fellow security guard, Jacob Manzanga.

According to prosecutor Karen Magundani, the theft happened on December 26, 2025, at around 2AM.

The two guards teamed up and plotted to steal the maize, bringing in Dumisani Moyo as their accomplice.

Moyo, who pleaded not guilty, is currently out of custody and will return to court on April 17.

The court heard that Moyo loaded the stolen maize into his truck — but their plan didn’t last long.
Police officers on patrol intercepted the truck and recovered 28 bags of 50kg maize.
Things quickly fell apart from there.

Moyo led police to a house in Mahatshula North, where another 33 bags were recovered from an earlier delivery.

In total, 61 bags worth US$1 037 were stolen — and all were recovered, thanks to the swift action of the police.
The bust led to the arrest of Amahlangu and Makwature, ending their inside job in dramatic fashion.
