Self-belief: The greatest gift every student can give themselves

Dr Manners Msongelwa

SUCCESS is not determined by where a person comes from but by where they choose to go.

Across Zimbabwe and many parts of Africa, thousands of students wake up every morning carrying burdens far heavier than their school bags. Some come from broken families, others have lost one or both parents, while many struggle with poverty, hunger and rejection. Yet history continues to prove that difficult beginnings do not determine a person’s destination.

One of the greatest qualities that every learner must develop is self-belief. It is the confidence that says, “I can succeed despite my circumstances.”

It is the determination to keep moving forward even when life appears unfair. Self-belief is often the difference between those who surrender to challenges and those who transform their lives through education.

Many students are discouraged because their parents are divorced or have passed away. Such experiences can leave emotional scars and make young people feel abandoned or hopeless. However, while these situations are painful, they should never become an excuse to stop dreaming. Countless successful people around the world grew up without both parents, yet they persevered because they believed that education could change their future.

Others come from disadvantaged backgrounds where entire families share one or two small rooms. Some students study under candlelight because there is no electricity, while others struggle to find a quiet place to read. Poverty can make learning difficult, but it should never make success impossible. A person’s address should never determine their future. Education remains one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty.

There are also students who go to school without food. During break time or lunchtime, they watch classmates eating while they sit quietly, pretending not to be hungry. Hunger affects concentration and learning, but it should not destroy hope. Many successful individuals remember studying on empty stomachs while holding firmly to the belief that one day their lives would be different.

For many learners, the journey to school itself is another challenge. Walking five to ten kilometres every day requires endurance and determination. Others struggle to pay school fees and constantly fear being sent home. Some own only one school uniform or one pair of shoes, which they wear every day throughout the year. These hardships can be embarrassing, but they should never define a learner’s worth or potential.

Sadly, some students lose confidence because they dislike their names, surnames or family backgrounds. Others become victims of bullying because of their appearance, body shape, disability or because they answered a question incorrectly in class. Words spoken by others can be painful, but they do not determine a person’s value. Every learner deserves respect, dignity and an equal opportunity to succeed. Instead of allowing insults to destroy confidence, students should let their achievements become their loudest response.

Mistakes are another source of discouragement. Some students carry guilt over poor decisions they made in the past. Others have failed important examinations, including O-Level, and believe their dreams have come to an end. Failure, however, is not the opposite of success—it is often part of the journey towards it. Every examination can be repeated, every lesson can be learned and every setback can become a stepping stone towards greater achievement.

Young mothers who left school because of pregnancy also deserve encouragement rather than condemnation. Dropping out of school should never mean giving up on education forever. Returning to school requires courage but it also demonstrates resilience and determination. Every learner deserves a second chance to complete their education and build a brighter future.

The common thread in all these challenges is that they test a student’s belief in themselves. External circumstances may create obstacles but internal determination creates opportunities. Students who choose to rise above their difficulties often discover strengths they never knew they possessed.

Success begins with developing positive daily habits. Students must cultivate a love for reading, become curious learners, ask questions, seek knowledge beyond the classroom and remain disciplined in their studies. They should dream big, set clear academic goals, manage their time wisely and work consistently towards those goals. Hard work, perseverance and resilience remain timeless ingredients for success.

Education is more than passing examinations. It is about changing family histories, creating new opportunities and inspiring future generations. A student who remains committed to learning today can become tomorrow’s doctor, engineer, teacher, entrepreneur, lawyer, scientist or national leader. One determined learner has the power to transform an entire family and uplift a whole community.

Teachers, parents, guardians and communities also have an important responsibility. They must encourage learners rather than discourage them, recognise effort rather than focusing only on failure and remind every child that their background should never become a prison for their future. Every word of encouragement can strengthen a learner’s confidence and inspire them to continue striving for excellence.

Every student should remember this simple truth: your circumstances may explain where you started, but they do not decide where you will finish. Your past does not define your future. Your struggles do not determine your destiny. What matters most is your willingness to believe in yourself, work hard, remain focused and never give up.

No matter how difficult life may seem today, tomorrow can be different. Believe in yourself. Read with determination. Dream without limits. Work harder than your circumstances. Refuse to let failure have the final word. Change your family’s story through education and become living proof that success is possible for anyone who refuses to surrender.

The future belongs to those who believe they can achieve it and that future can begin today.
