AS we celebrate Women’s Month, it is essential to highlight the remarkable stories of women who are not only breaking barriers but also redefining their futures.
One such woman is Shalom Tivatyi, a 26-year-old designer from Bluffhill in Harare, whose journey from a childhood dreamer to a burgeoning interior designer exemplifies dedication, creativity, and the power of self-learning.
Born in Zimbabwe and spending half her life in Botswana, she returned to her roots as a teenager to complete her studies.
Her childhood dreams evolved from fashion to architecture and eventually to interior design. This transition was not just geographical but also pivotal in shaping her identity.
“I am a passionate designer. I have always had a passion for this and the passion started when I was in Primary education. Design has always been a main character in my life,” she shared in an interview.
Tivatyi’s passion for aesthetics and creativity has been a constant thread, weaving through her experiences and aspirations.
Despite her love for design, she faced significant challenges when she graduated with a degree in industrial design from a local university.
“I graduated as a blank slate, I mean knowing only a few things about the industry but with consistent learning I made my way through,” said Tivatyi.
This lack of experience could have deterred many, but for her, it was merely a stepping stone. With an unwavering spirit, she applied for an interior design position at a local company in Harare, fully transparent about her lack of experience.
Her journey of self-discovery and growth truly began when she took it upon herself to learn Sketch Up through online tutorials.
“By the grace of God, the owner of the company still allowed me to come and learn whilst working.
“I decided to teach myself Sketch Up from watching YouTube videos. With growth comes experience, and that’s really what I need right now,” explained Tivatyi, highlighting the tenacity that defines her character.
In just a month, she not only grasped the software but went on to refine her skills through consistent practice. As she navigated her new role, she discovered an even deeper love for interior design.
“I managed to teach myself throughout the whole process of working with clients, producing designs for them while trying to understand interior design. I look forward to each day at the office because I know that there’s growth that comes with it,”
Her enthusiasm is palpable; she eagerly anticipates each day at the office, knowing it brings opportunities for growth and learning.
At just 26 years old,she is not only a role model for her peers but also an inspiration for young women everywhere.
Her dream is not just a personal goal; it is a vision of building a strong clientele and creating a name for herself in the design industry.
“I am more than happy with the progress I’ve made. I plan to do my own thing, be it on the side or my main thing and I solely work for myself,” said Tivatyi.
Her story is one of resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment to her dreams.
As she continues to forge her path in the design world, she stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for young women everywhere.
