Ever since her collaboration with a host of other songbirds from around the continent, life has been one exhilarating ride for Zimbabwea��s Selmor Mtukudzi, and it reached a new high this week when she mixed and mingled with South African born Hollywood superstar Charlize Theron.
The singera��s profile has grown in leaps and bounds ever since she added her voice to the Strong Girls anthem, a women empowerment song that features some of Africaa��s biggest female stars.
This week Selmor came together with her fellow stars to do their bit for the less fortunate during Mandela Day widely celebrated in South Africa and the rest of the continent on 18 July every year.
Mandela Day took centre stage at this yeara��s World Aids Conference, withA� Selmor joining Waje from Nigeria, Arielle T from Gabon, and Judith Sephuma from South Africa for volunteer activities and performances at the conference.
The songbirds packed food for more than 20 000 orphans thereby volunteering far more than the 67 minutes that is usually asked of people on Nelson Mandela Day.
The highlight of Selmora��s day however, was an encounter with Hollywood star Theron, who has over the years become a high profile advocate for human rights and the plight of the poor around the world.
a�?She spoke about how the young generation is the one that will help end HIV/Aids. We need to educate and empower them, and we can reach our goal of ending Aids by 2030. It is possible,a�? said an excited Selmor.
Selmor called on the Zimbabwean government to put more resources into the fight against HIV/Aids, as despite spirited efforts the scourge still needed to be eradicated completely in her home country.
