FRESH from clinching second runners-up at last year’s Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival national finals, Semvumba Arts Ensemble is boldly transforming from a humble community troupe into a professional powerhouse.
Founded on March 12, 2024, by youthful leader, Takudzwa Matete, the 23-member group has quickly carved out a reputation as one of Zimbabwe’s most promising cultural outfits.
With 10 female performers in its ranks, Semvumba blends youthful energy with deep respect for heritage — a signature balance that has become their hallmark.
Their breakout moment came at the Mutare Showgrounds, where they wowed audiences with the Dinhe dance — also known as Mhembero Dinhe — a vibrant celebration of harvest.
Polished choreography, dazzling costumes, and powerful storytelling earned them national recognition and proved they were ready for bigger stages.
Now, the ensemble is stepping into the mainstream. Speaking to Weekender Entertainment, Matete confirmed the group’s new direction.
“We are now operating as a professional arts group, ready to take our performances to bigger platforms. Our vision is to fuse tradition with modern appeal. By adding guitars, drums, and percussion to our traditional setup, we believe our sound will mesmerise audiences and open new doors,” said Matete.
Traditionally anchored in instruments such as the mbira, marimba, hosho and indigenous drums, the ensemble is now experimenting with a broader musical palette.
This fusion of old and new is, not just an artistic choice, but a strategic move to remain relevant in an evolving entertainment landscape while still preserving cultural authenticity.
Beyond performance, the group is also expanding its footprint through community engagement.
Schools and public events have become key focus areas, as the ensemble seeks to inspire younger generations through live shows that are both entertaining and educational.
In addition, the group is venturing into the manufacturing of traditional instruments, including mbira and other indigenous tools.
This initiative, not only supports cultural preservation, but also provides an income stream and practical skills for its members.
At its core, the ensemble remains deeply rooted in its founding mission which is to use the power of performing arts to address pressing social issues. Through dance, music, and storytelling, the group tackles topics such as drug abuse, child marriages, and community violence which are issues that continue to affect many communities across Zimbabwe.
“Our performances are not just about entertainment. We want to educate, to spark conversations, and to encourage positive change in our communities. Art is a powerful tool, and we are committed to using it responsibly,” added Matete.
The group also places strong emphasis on youth empowerment. By providing a creative platform, Semvumba Arts Ensemble nurtures self-confidence, cultural pride, and a sense of purpose among its members many of whom are young people navigating the challenges of modern society.
With their recent success, growing confidence, and clear vision, the group aims to position itself as more than just a dance troupe but becoming a cultural movement that celebrates Zimbabwe’s rich traditions while embracing innovation and social impact.
