Seven suspected armed robbers were arrested in Harare a few hours after they had raided a company based in Southerton and got away with a Nissan NP300 vehicle and a safe containing US$12 000.
The gang also stole a Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) video digital recorder, an HP laptop and other valuables on Monday at around 2.20am.
However, the CID Homicide Crack Team in Harare had managed to arrest all the suspects by afternoon.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they have declared war against armed robbers.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of seven suspects in connection with a case of armed robbery which occurred in Southerton on January 20 at around 2.20 am,” he said.
The suspects are Tapiwanashe Bakasa (30), Rodgers Magreen (28), Tinashe Thompson (30), Tatenda Mashayamombe (29), Peter Mahwite (49), Anymore Gatsi (38) and Wilson Masvosve (35).
The stolen vehicle was dumped at the intersection of Robert Mugabe Road and Julius Nyerere Street in Harare’s central business district.
On January 20, detectives received information that the suspects had driven the stolen vehicle to a house in Mufakose before dumping it in the CBD.
The detectives tracked down the suspects to Mufakose, resulting in the arrest of Tapiwanashe Bakasa and the recovery of the safe that was containing various company documents and the CCTV digital recorder.
Bakasa implicated Rodgers Magreen, leading to his arrest in Stoneridge, Harare, and the recovery of US$1 565 and an HP laptop.
Magreen implicated Tinashe Thompson, who was arrested at Chibwe Shopping Centre in Stoneridge.
Subsequently, a Unique Pistol with an empty magazine, pepper spray, an okapi knife, US$800, and a motorcycle bought using the loot were recovered.
The other suspects, Tatenda Mashayamombe, Peter Mahwite, Anymore Gatsi and Wilson Masvosve were also arrested in Mbare on the same day.
