family following the death of Cde Zaranyika Joseph Chamunogwa.
Cde Chamunogwa died on Sunday after succumbing to hypertension.
He was 69.
In his message, Cde Shamu said it was difficult to comprehend how devastated and sad the Chamunogwa family was after his death.
“The department of commissariat and the party are with you during this sorrowful period and assure the family that we share the grief and that this burden will become light due to God’s eternal love and all our support.
“The party has lost a revolutionary and patriot par excellence whose unwavering commitment to the armed struggle and the ideals of the revolution was a motivating factor to many of his compatriots.”
Cde Chamunogwa, whose Chimurenga name was Cde Joe Chaminuka, was born in Chief Mabota’s area in Gutu, Masvingo on September 23, 1942.
He joined politics in 1958 when Dr Joshua Nkomo, the then president of the Southern Rhodesia African National Congress addressed a political rally at Stanley Square in Makokoba, Bulawayo.
Dr Nkomo paid Cde Chamunogwa’s subscription fee to become a member of the Southern Rhodesia African National Congress Youth League at the rally.
Cde Chamunogwa later joined the Zapu Youth League at its inception and he was appointed secretary for Mpopoma/Matshobana until the party was banned.
He became involved in the recruitment of cadres for the liberation struggle whom he would hand over to the late Vice President Dr Simon Muzenda and Dr Silas Mundawarara in Harare and Henry Hamadziripi in Lusaka, Zambia.
In 1975, Cde Chamunogwa was put on the list of the most wanted people by the Rhodesian security forces.
Cde Shamu said Cde Chamunogwa “played a pivotal role in the launch and execution of the Third Chimurenga, The fast track Land Reform Programme in March, 2000 and was a founder member of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association.”
Cde Chamunogwa is survived by his wife and several children.
Mourners are gathered at Number 15, Nene Close, Bluffhill, Harare and burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
