THE election of long time Manicaland basketball administrator, Tonderai Shasha into the national Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) executive is set to keep the province abreast with developments in the game.

During the elective Annual General Meeting held in Gwanda over the weekend, BUZ re-elected president, Joe Mujuru from Bulawayo, while secretary-general, Charmaine Chamboko of Harare Province was re-elected in the same capacity.

The woman and youth portfolio saw Jacqueline Chironga of Harare retaining her post, while Manicaland’s Shasha settled for the technical commission post.

The competitions portfolio will be handled by newly elected Gideon Chikopa of Harare.

The athletes’ commission post saw Taurai Chitsinde of Harare being re-elected to the same position.

Shasha said: “I fully understand that this is a national responsibility that I am getting into, but it is also a fact that we all have a sense of belonging and I take this as a great advantage for Manicaland.

“In the past four years, Manicaland trained more basketball coaches than any other province with the help of Hartzell Old Basketball Association (HOBA).

“We built more basketball courts in rural areas than any other province.

This will be a great advantage for most coaches in Manicaland who want to undergo FIBA courses.

“We will be scheduling some of the FIBA clinics here in Manicaland and other small provinces like Mashonaland Central, Masvingo, Mashonaland East and Matebeleland South.

“The province need to work extra hard to prove that they are real national champions and players deserve to be drafted into national teams,” said Shasha.
