Shock and outrage at ‘loot part’ in funeral parlour

PARTYING with the dead!

It’s not a script  from a Halloween party film, it happened in Luveve and residents witnessed it before police put the nonsense to a halt.

Luveve residents were left in stitches on Saturday morning after police put to an end to a three-day marathon party in a mortuary where suspected looters were enjoying beer and groceries they stole from shops during the violent protests which engulfed the city last week.

It is alleged that the daring imbibers were drinking ice cold beer that was kept in the mortuary cold rooms where corpses are kept awaiting burial.

Some of the people who claimed to have been part of the drinking but quit after witnessing terrifying scenes said they saw the party hosts pushing corpses aside to make way for beer in the cold mortuary compartments.

A source who spoke to B-Metro but requested anonymity said he vomited all the beer he had consumed after discovering the cooling source.

“I  understood that they were hiding the stash in a mortuary, I mean it’s normal for people who work in a mortuary to be comfortable keeping things in their offices but for someone to go to the extent of putting beer to cool in a drawer where dead bodies are kept just drove me insane. I felt like we were doing some acts of witchcraft and I threw up non-stop and was very sober in a matter of moments,” said the source.

Another source who only identified himself as Mzoe from Luveve suburb said he was given a six pack of ciders for his girlfriend and two six packs of beer for himself and he drank with colleagues from a car while playing music inside the premises of the morgue.

The spine chilling accounts of the Halloween themed party were unearthed following a dispute between the party hosts on the sharing criteria for the loot after the younger sister to the morgue owner demanded a higher ration than that of her accomplices.

The stolen stash wrangle spilled to the ears of some members of the public who tipped police after they had also observed strange behaviour of drunkenness and merry-making in a place that preserves the dead.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed arresting two men and a woman in connection with the looted goods.

Police arrested Thandekile Mzizi (28), Sisasenkosi Zulu (35) and Methuseli Moyo (30) in connection with the case. Part of the confiscated loot included assorted liquor, foodstuffs and other groceries.

“I can confirm that following a tip-off from members of the public, our officers raided Zulu Khayalami funeral parlour in Luveve suburb where suspected looted goods worth more than $3 000 were recovered. We are still conducting further investigations,” said Insp Ncube.

A visibly disturbed elderly Luveve man who spoke to B-Metro said youths had lost respect for the dead and would be followed by curses.

“It was very strange, they were playing music and bingeing on beer in a mortuary. We do not know what happened but the next thing they were arrested. People have surely lost respect for the dead. They will be followed by heavy curses to the grave,” said the resident who declined to be named.

Mbusiso Zulu, the owner of the mortuary, said he was not aware of the matter. He, however, confirmed that his sister (Sisasenkosi) was part of the arrested trio.

“I know nothing about what you are talking about as nobody has told me anything about what transpired at my mortuary. However, my sister was arrested and police denied me access to her. I even went to Khami Prison and on two attempts I was denied my right to see my sister. I want to hear her out and find out what it is that she was lacking that made her find herself in that situation,” said Zulu.

In a similarly bizarre incident in Entumbane suburb, police busted a couple that had concealed looted goods by burying them in their backyard and planting a vegetable garden over them. They were arrested and the looted groceries were confiscated.
