FRENCH police have launched a full-scale probe into the sudden death of South Africa’s Ambassador to France, Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, whose body was discovered at the Hyatt Hotel in Paris on Tuesday.
The diplomat, a former cabinet minister and one of South Africa’s most seasoned political figures, was found unresponsive in his hotel room under circumstances still shrouded in mystery.
In a statement, South Africa’s Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation confirmed his passing. “The Government of the Republic of South Africa announces with deep sorrow and profound regret the untimely passing of His Excellency Ambassador Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, South Africa’s Ambassador to the French Republic,” it read.
Officials said French investigators are now working to establish what exactly led to his demise.
“Ambassador Mthethwa was a distinguished servant of the nation, whose career was marked by dedicated service in critical ministerial portfolios, including Minister of Police and Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture,” said the ministry.
The respected diplomat leaves behind his wife and children. “The Government of South Africa extends its deepest and sincerest condolences to the family of Ambassador Mthethwa, and to his friends and colleagues during this period of immense grief. We honour his legacy of unwavering patriotism and service to our nation.”
Before his Paris posting in December 2023, Mthethwa served on the Board of Directors for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee.
South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, described the passing as a devastating blow. “I have no doubt that his passing is not only a national loss but is also felt within the international diplomatic community,” he said.
French authorities have not yet released details on the cause of death as investigations continue.
