Hardly a day passes without reports of an armed robbery or at an attempted one in the country.
Last week, at least 40 passengers aboard a Beitbridge-bound Boundary Express bus were robbed of cash and valuables by armed men in what appeared to be a well-planned heist.
The last time this happened was in the early 1990s when the late Stephen Chidhumo audaciously robbed a Gokwe-bound bus.
Early this year, a group of armed robbers got away with US$2,5 million and $40 000 in a movie-style robbery of a cash-in-transit security truck along Harare-Chinhoyi road near Gwebi Bridge.
Prior to that, in December, five armed men stormed Chivi’s N.Richards wholesale shop and about US$35 000.
The incident happened a few weeks after a group of armed robbers attacked two security guards delivering Zupco’s weekend cash collections to bank in Bulawayo and got away
with over $2 million, US$3 362 and R7 390.
In Esigodini, armed robbers used a bolt cutter to break a burglar bar before getting away with at least US$87 000, cellphones and a laptop.
Farmers have not been spared.
Just recently, a truck ferrying 25 tobacco bales from Nyazura to Harare was hijacked.
The robbers got away with the load before dumping the vehicle in one of the capital’s high-density suburbs.
These cases are just the tip of an iceberg.
