Shop assistant throws new born baby in Blair toilet

It is alleged that Simanzini Moyo (26), who was employed as a shop assistant at Masuku Shop in Siganda, gave birth to a baby boy and wrapped it in a cloth and put it in a sack before throwing the infant into a Blair toilet near her work place.

Moyo’s employer, Mr Mandla Masuku (45), reportedly heard the baby crying from inside the Blair toilet and alerted Siganda police who rescued the baby.

Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Billie Dube said the accused tried to kill her baby two days after giving birth.

“We are handling a case where on 15 November a woman after knocking off from work, developed labour  pains on her way home. At around 10pm she gave birth to a baby boy.

“On 17 November at around 5pm, the accused took the baby and wrapped it in a cloth. She put it in a sack and threw it into a Blair toilet,” he said.

Insp Dube said police in Siganda rescued the baby while the woman was arrested.

“Mr Masuku knew about her pregnancy and was surprised to see the mother without the baby despite having signs of having given birth,” said Insp Dube.

He said Mr Masuku already suspected that Moyo had concealed birth when he made a report.

Insp Dube said police were still investigating the matter and the woman would soon appear in            court.

He urged women to desist from committing infanticide.

“Women must not attempt to kill their babies if they are not ready to venture into parenthood. They must at least send them for adoption or to orphanages.

“As police, we will not hesitate to arrest those who infringe on children’s rights. We are there to protect children and those found on the wrong side of the law would be brought to book,” said Insp Dube.
