WHAT is the reason behind marriage?
Until recently, I thought it was only love that motivates people to marry and stay together.
I was wrong.
There are some people who feel marriage is meaningless without children.
Barrenness has, therefore, collapsed many marriages. At the earliest sign of barrenness, a marriage usually comes under attack from “outsiders”.
Everyone — family and friends — starts to feel like they have the right to comment on the issue.
It is not unusual to hear relatives or friends asking a couple when they plan to have children or what is stopping them.
According to Psalm 127:3, children are a gift from God.
Such scriptures should help guide our thoughts. The gift (child) is given as and when the giver (God) wants.
This means no amount of probing or changing partners will help salvage the situation. In most cases, what is disturbing in childless marriages is that women are often blamed.
Fertility affects both men and women.
However, there are instances in which couples fail to conceive even in circumstances where they are all healthy.
Unfortunately, there are many cases were men abandon the marriages in the hope of finding fertile unions elsewhere.
But this comes with its own consequences.
Besides the danger of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs), there is also the likelihood of looking after another man’s child after being lied to.
It is advisable to stick to your partner through thick and thin.
Men seem to be affected the most when they fail to conceive, as they consider this an attack on their ego.
They also struggle to face their relatives and friends.
However, this is unreasonable.
Societies should comfort and encourage couples facing such challenges.
Their union largely depends on how we react.
Couples also need to reflect and discover themselves.
They need to be wary of family members that offer unhelpful advice and focus on celebrating the love that brought them together. Marriages should be founded on love. Love conquers all forms of stigma and unwanted attacks.
It is imperative for us to realise that stress and anxiety also affect the reproductive system. It is important to always remember that children are a gift from God.
Marriage is of paramount importance between husband and wife.
In the book of Genesis, Sarah was blessed with a child after reaching menopause.
God’s time is always the best time.
