Authorities in Shurugwi have dismissed false reports circulating on social media that part of the road along the Boterekwa escarpment has collapsed.

There has been panic among motorists that the Boterekwa pass which is used mostly by cross-border trucks and other traffic to connect to either end of the country has caved-in due to illegal mining activities.

Shurugwi District Development Coordinator Mr Romeo Shangwa said motorists and transport operators should continue using the highway because it is safe.

“Those using Zvishavane-Shurugwi or Zvishavane-Mandamahwe Highway should continue with their plans and use the route as the road is safe,” he said.

“What is coming out on social media with images of a huge gulley appearing to have developed on the road is all fake.”
