Castro Sibanda immortalised his name as the greatest chess player in Bulawayo by winning his 12th Bulawayo Chess Association major title at the BCA Easter Open at the National University of Science and Technology.
Top players like Tapiwa Jele, Moses Mondiwa, Benson Chinodyanama, Farai Janyure and Khumbulani Chirwa took part in the competition which saw Castro record six wins and a draw from the seven games that he played.
Tapiwa Jele finished second after he won five games and drew two, while Benson came out position three after winning six games and losing one.
The Bulawayo chess king who represented Zimbabwe at the Olympiad in Norway 2014 could not hide his joy.
“It’s a huge achievement for me to win the 12th BCA major title and the thought of knowing that I am the only player who has managed to achieve such a great feet is amazing. An added bonus to this is that I no longer play chess a lot due to work commitment, I was particularly impressed by the performance of Tapiwa Jele and Moses Mondiwa who have been improving game by game,” he said.
Nust chess player, Paidanashe Zengezi emerged victorious in the ladies’ section. She won all the five games that she took part in while Nomalungelo Mathe, a former Sizane High School student came out on position two with Nomvelo Zikhali finishing third. Young and rising chess star Koni won the development section as he beat his opponents one after the other.
