Sikhala’s lawyers say holding illegal

Court Reporter
Lawyers representing MDC-99 leader Job Sikhala in a case in which he is being accused of kidnapping two people from Chiadzwa and bringing them to Harare want a High Court order compelling police to bring the politician before a magistrate for rema-nd proceedings.
Alternatively, the lawyers have proposed that their client be released from police custody.
In an application filed at the High Court on Monday by Mr Obey Shava of Mbidzo Muchadehama and Makoni Legal Practitioners, Sikhala submitted that his arrest and holding in custody were unlawful.
Mr Shava yesterday said Sikhala indicated that police had communicated to him that he would soon appear before a Mutare magistrate.
Sikhala was arrested last Friday and alle-ges that police assaulted him.
Justice Ben Hlatshwayo is expected to determine the matter at the High Court.
