BUDDING poet Melusi Dube, also known as”Sir Willow Vesper”, is harnessing the power of verse after penning a poem for Chief Mbusi Dakamela titled, Imiklomela kaDakamela.
The ballad recognises the impact of the annually held Imiklomela kaDakamela (Chief Dakamela Achievers’ Awards), as well as the profound societal role of African traditional leadership.
The poem was strategically crafted ahead of this year’s edition of the awards, which are set to be held from 3 to 6 April at Chief Dakamela’s homestead in Nkayi, Matabeleland North.
Sir Willow Vesper said traditional leaders such as Chief Dakamela fulfil a sacred mandate, grounding communities and helping them remain connected to their culture and heritage.
In his composition, the poet links his artistic expression to the Chief’s tangible efforts in fostering community pride, development and cultural preservation through the awards.
“This poem stands as both an acknowledgement and amplification of Dakamela’s work, as I portray him as a traditional leader who is a vital anchor of society — a divinely appointed steward entrusted with the responsibility of shaping and guiding our communities.
“The poem presents Chief Dakamela as a cultural guardian who plays a critical role in preserving, understanding and passing on indigenous heritage, while also highlighting his importance as a unifier who fosters harmony, cohesion and a shared sense of humanity within the community of Nkayi and beyond,” said Sir Willow Vesper.

The poet said Imiklomela kaDakamela provides a platform that celebrates local talent, hard work and positive contribution — values he seeks to honour through his verses.
Sir Willow Vesper’s journey into the literary world was inspired by the works of renowned Zimbabwean author Memory Chirere, whose set books had a formative influence on his style of poetry.
He describes himself as “a writer passionate about capturing the essence of Zimbabwe’s streets through words.”
Apart from poetry recitals, Sir Willow Vesper is also involved in scriptwriting and is a member of his church choir.
