Olympic Committees elections in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.
A number of executive posts were up for grabs at the Anoca elections which were being held during the opening day of organisation’s three-day General Assembly that got underway yesterday and will run until tomorrow. Among the positions that were being contested for was that of the secretary-general’s seat which Sithole was eyeing.
In fact, Sithole was fighting to make a comeback as the secretary-general of Anoca, a post which was being held by Khaled Zein El Din of Egypt. Results were expected late last night.
Sithole was a member of the Executive Committee of Anoca since 1989 and was its secretary-general from 1997 until his appointment into office as the International Olympic Committee’s Director of International Co-operation and Development in 2003.
And after spending the past 10 years working for the IOC, Sithole was now seeking greener pastures elsewhere and was yesterday contesting with El Din.
Admire Masenda, the ZOC president, and his body’s chief executive, Anna Mguni, left Harare on Wednesday for Abidjan to attend the Anoca General Assembly and the local Olympic sports body pulled its weight behind Sithole in his quest to replace El Din as the Anoca secretary-general.
Before leaving for Abidjan on Wednesday, Mguni described Sithole as a distinguished Zimbabwean sports administrator.
