SIX people died on the spot when a Honda Fit they were travelling in collided head-on with a heavy truck near Yorkshire in Headlands along the Mutare-Harare Highway.
The accident occurred last night around 7:30pm at the 142km peg.
The accident involved a Honda Fit and a Sino Howo Truck.
The Howo truck, belonging to Chris Logistics, was travelling towards Harare while the Honda Fit, carrying six passengers including the driver, was headed for Rusape.
It is alleged that the Honda Fit was speeding, and attempted to overtake a tractor on a blind curve, encroaching into the lane of the oncoming truck, resulting in the fatal head-on collision.
The Honda Fit was trapped beneath the truck and dragged for about 50 metres.
All the six occupants sustained severe injuries and died at the scene.
Their bodies were taken to Rusape General Hospital mortuary, where they await post-mortem examinations.
National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident, but did not provide further details.
“It is true that the accident happened last night, and we will be issuing a press statement to that effect within the next hour or so,” he said.
Rusape General Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Stewart Karembo also confirmed receiving the bodies at the hospital mortuary.
“According to the report we received, the accident occurred near Yorkshire (Headlands) last night, resulting in the death of all six passengers in the Honda Fit. Their bodies were subsequently brought to Rusape General Hospital mortuary,” he said.
