Sixth Form pupil lands scholarship after impressing at Stitsha auditions

They will do the course with Fit for Living Gym situated in Bulawayo.

The other two are Zenzo Nyathi and Nomathamsanqa Mkhwananzi.

In an interview with Chronicle Entertainment on Tuesday, Dlodlo said although Pride was a good performing artiste, she has taken steps for the rehearsal schedule not to affect her schoolwork.

He said he had spoken to her parents and they had agreed that Pride’s performance at school would be closely monitored.

“Pride impressed us with her performance and she will now be able to teach others aerobics. I then went to her parents and asked them whether or not they were aware that she was doing Stitsha and they said they were fully aware of her involvement. I was concerned that since the rehearsals were so time consuming, she would be distracted from school, but I was assured that it was not the case,” said Dlodlo.

He said after speaking to Pride’s parents he went to her school and spoke to the headmaster to see to it that her rehearsal schedule does not interfere with schoolwork.

“We want her future to be secure and we do not want Pride to underperform at school because of Stitsha. We want to support our performing artistes in all their endeavours outside the play,” said Dlodlo.

He said they had chosen Pride to be a dancer in the play so as not to overload her.

“We did that so she is not burdened with a script. Pride will be a dancer but this does not mean she is not talented, she has got lots of it,” he said.

He said rehearsals were going on well and performing artistes were working hard to perfect their roles in the play.

Dlodlo said the play would incorporate dances from India, Botswana and East Africa with Zimbabwean dances to add more variety to the play.

Pride, who is doing Literature in English, SiNdebele and Sociology at school, said she wants to pursue a Degree in Theatre Arts at the University of Zimbabwe.

“I want to further my studies in the arts with a degree in theatre arts. My passion for the arts started in 2007 with an Emganwini-based group called Bambatha Arts Centre,” said Pride the diminutive 18-year-old.

She said being in Stitsha was a great opportunity for her and she would use it to the fullest.

Ten performing artistes are going through rehearsals for the play written by Cont Mhlanga that will premiere on 3 August.

Rehearsals are being conducted at Amakhosi Cultural Centre. The cast is a mixture of new and seasoned performing artistes.

Nomathamsanqa Mkhwananzi landed the lead role of Thuli and Zenzo Nyathi, popularly known as Mzambane in Amakorokoza, will play Mopho, Thuli’s brother.

A new actor, Trevor Kanema, will play Thuli’s boyfriend, Mbazo, and seasoned actor Memory Kumbota will play Thuli’s father with Duduzile Sibanda playing her mother.

Stitsha is a play about a woman’s struggle to be recognised and listened to when she wants to produce a play. However, she faces stiff resistance from her father who wants her to become a secretary and get married.
