Siyephambili Drive tops Bulawayo accident hotspots

POLICE in Bulawayo have raised alarm over the rising number of road traffic accidents along Siyephambili Drive, which has now emerged as the city’s worst accident hotspot.

According to police, the busy road, which is a major link between the western suburbs, the city centre and the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road, has recorded the highest number of crashes this year, dominated by head-on collisions and hit-and-run incidents.

Police attribute the trend to speeding, reckless driving and failure by motorists to observe traffic rules, particularly at intersections and pedestrian crossings.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said law enforcement agents were deeply concerned by the statistics and now working closely with relevant stakeholders to introduce mitigatory measures.

“We have noted with concern Siyephambili Drive continues to record the highest number of accidents in the city. As police, we are engaging the Bulawayo City Council and other stakeholders to put in place measures that will reduce these incidents,” he said.

Comm Nyathi said some of the measures under consideration include increasing police visibility along the stretch, installing additional signage and tightening speed control mechanisms.

He urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic laws. Comm Nyathi said residents have long expressed concern over the road, particularly during peak hours when traffic is heaviest.

“Frequent accidents have resulted in injuries, loss of life and damage to property. We urge drivers to slow down, respect other road users and remain alert at all times. Most of these accidents are preventable,” said Comm Nyathi.

The planned interventions are expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks as authorities move to improve road safety and curb the rising number of accidents this festive season.
