ORGANISERS of afro-soul songstress Tariro Negitare’s show have described it as a success, as they inch closer to raising funds for three fashion designers travelling to Toronto, Canada, for the African Fashion Week next month.
Tariro Negitare (real name Tariro Ruzvidzo) performed at the Rainbow Cinema on Wednesday as a way to raise funds for the designers.
The show, dubbed “An intimate night with Tariro Negitare,” was part of efforts to raise $2,450 for Sidumiso Tshuma of the Shadow label, Nkululeko Ncube of Rebelious Klothing and Sheenah Moyo of the BlinQ label.
One of the organisers Gilmore “Tee” Moyo said funds raised for the show were enough for one designer’s participation at the fashion week.
“Tariro’s show helped to secure funds for one of the designers’ participation.
“We have raised $600 from the show and we would like to thank our sponsors and partners for their support,” he said.
Moyo said they had come up with a three-pronged approach to raise funds for the designers.
“Besides Tariro’s show, there is a $1 initiative that we are doing where people can donate at least a dollar through EcoCash. We also have support letters from the Bulawayo Mayor for us to seek sponsorship,” he said.
Officials from the Bulawayo City Council were also in attendance to support the initiative.
Tariro said she had benefited from performing outside the country and hoped the designers would attend the African Fashion Week.
“Trips abroad have helped me improve my music and broaden my mind to think outside the box.
“Hope the designers will make it to Canada and hopefully learn to produce quality products,” she said.
An impressed Tariro who serenaded over 100 people with her lulling alto, sultry voice coupled with the duo of Rufaro and Maria backing her, said she did not expect many people to attend her show.
“I was surprised to see so many people who came out to watch me perform. It speaks volumes for the people of Bulawayo as they appreciate good music and support their local designers,” she said.
