Sneakers for lobola

A CHIGODORA man bought sneakers instead of formal shoes for his father-in-law as part of his lobola requirements.

What infuriated the Mufara family most was the fact that the lobola for their daughter came more than 30 years late and that their son-in-law, Lameck Mutsenhu had to be ordered by the court to pay off the bride price arrears.

This was after the elderly Leviticus Mafara had approached Headman Chigodora’s court to assist him to get what was due to him from his son-in-law.

As a result, Mutsenhu was ordered by the court to bring the things he had been charged by his in-laws to the court.

Mutsenhu in-turn bought a new blue suit, a pair of socks, a belt, shirt, tie and a pair of white sneakers to go with the formal outfit for his wife’s father, Leviticus Mafara.

However, the pair of shoes did not please Mafara who had expected a pair of formal leather shoes to go with his new suit.

He expressed further dismay that besides Mutsenhu’s failure to buy the right shoes, the suit was not complete as it should have been accompanied by a cellphone, a hat, a classy walking stick and a watch.

“I am old, but I know that these shoes are inappropriate to wear them with a formal suit. These sneakers are for kids and I do not like them. I beg the court to order him to take them back and bring the right shoes for the suit. Even my friends will laugh at me when they see putting on these shoes with a suit,” he said.

The elderly man complained that he preferred three-piece suits.

“This is not the kind of suit that I wanted. He should have asked me what I wanted. I prefer a three-piece suit with a matching waistcoat and this blue colour is not my favourite. Had he asked me, I would have told him what I wanted, but after instructions from this court, he just rushed and bought me what he deemed fit. I honestly do not like two-piece suits,” said the elderly man.

Mafara also said with the mobile handset missing, it showed that his son-in-law was not serious about paying him his daughter’s bride price.

“When I gave him my lobola list, we agreed that he would buy a mobile phone for me, but it is missing here today. The hat which usually goes with a suit is also missing, together with a watch and a classy walking stick.

“This just shows that this man is not serious about marrying my daughter. I think he does not even care that he has stayed with my daughter for more than 30 years without paying anything. How can I go around with a suit with no shoes, watch and walking stick? It just does not make any sense,” charged the man.

Headman Chigodora’s messenger inspects the clothes and shoes

Mutsenhu, however, said he would correct his mistake of buying the wrong shoes.

“I have paid off my lobola debt and I will look for money to buy the few required items for my in-laws. I sent someone to buy the shoes and I did not know that he would buy the wrong shoes,” he said.

Headman Chigodora castigated Mutsenhu for buying the sneakers and ordered him to exchange them with better shoes.

“Honestly, those shoes are for young men. You can give them to your school going child so that he can use them as sports shoes. I understand that you have done all you can to get these clothes here today.

“They are all new and still tagged. We applaud you for that. All you need to do now is buy the cellphone, watch, walking stick and leather shoes so that we close this chapter,” ruled Headman Chigodora.

He also urged Mafara to accept what was bought by his in-law and not continue whimpering.

“Very few people in this area have such a nice suit. The suit is of top class, stop complaining. If you love three-piece suits so much, maybe you can give this one to your son and have him buy you a three-piece suit. Otherwise, you should be content that this man has done everything he can to get you your clothes,” said Headman Chigodora.

Mutsenhu also paid four beasts as lobola to the Mafara family.
