TALK about stealing the spotlight! A bold Emganwini man, who thought he could pull a fast one in broad daylight ended up starring in his own crime thriller, courtesy of Simunye Shop’s CCTV cameras.

Elvis Bheka (36) recently appeared in Western Commonage Court, facing theft charges after he allegedly helped himself to a brown sling bag from a parked Mazda T35.

Prosecutor, Tafara Dzimbanhete told the court that the petty plot played out on May 3, 2025, just after lunchtime.

The complainant, Thandazani Siwela Khumalo (29), parked his white and silver Mazda T35 outside Simunye Shop and dashed inside to make a quick cash withdrawal.

That’s when Bheka allegedly made his move. He found the car doors shut, circled like a hungry hyena and then pounced. According to court records, he snatched a brown sling bag containing US$50, ZAR336, a national ID card and a work trip sheet.

Khumalo came back seven minutes later only to find his bag had vanished along with his trust in humanity.

However, Bheka didn’t know Big Brother was watching.

Thanks to tip-offs and the all-seeing CCTV footage from the shop, CID detectives tracked down Bheka and watched the whole sneaky episode unfold on camera. The footage reportedly shows him loitering, plotting and eventually cracking open the driver’s door like a seasoned street magician.

The stolen goods, worth about US$55 and ZAR336, were never recovered. Maybe Bheka thought the sling bag would make a fashion statement. Instead, it made a criminal record.

The case was postponed to 2 July 2025, as the court waits for the CCTV footage to take centre stage. Spoiler alert: the ending doesn’t look good for Elvis.
