THEY’RE in the squad, they trained with the champions, but Trey Nyoni and Isaac Mabaya may walk away empty-handed from Liverpool’s Premier League title party!
The Zimbabwean pair, both on the Reds’ official 2024/25 Premier League squad list, are unlikely to receive automatic winners’ medals despite Liverpool’s emphatic 5-1 demolition of Tottenham at Anfield to seal their 20th English top-flight crown.
Why? Because Premier League rules are strict: a player must make at least five league appearances to automatically qualify for a medal.
17-year-old Nyoni, who made headlines earlier this season by becoming Liverpool’s youngest-ever player in European competition, was named in four EPL matchday squads – but didn’t get any minutes in the league. He did feature in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Champions League, showing massive promise for the future.
Mabaya, meanwhile, didn’t crack a league matchday squad this season. His only senior outing came in the FA Cup against Plymouth Argyle last season.
Despite not hitting the automatic threshold, the boys aren’t completely out of the medal race just yet. Liverpool gets 40 medals – and after handing out 21 to players who qualified, 19 are up for grabs at the club’s discretion.
That means Nyoni and Mabaya’s fate now lies in the hands of Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool hierarchy. Will they recognise their contribution behind the scenes?
All eyes will be on May 25 when Liverpool lifts the trophy against Crystal Palace – and Zimbabwean fans will be hoping to see their boys shine on that podium.
