A MEMBER of the Zimbabwe National Army has approached the courts seeking a protection order against a senior citizen whom she claims uses foul language on her whenever they meet.
Melody Muchaneta Chari and Margaret Chatongoza, who both reside in Dangamvura, appeared before Mutare magistrate Mrs Yeukai Chigodora.
The court heard that whenever Chatongoza sees Chari walking with her mother, she spits and calls her names.
“She shouts at me saying I am a woman of loose morals. That is called stereotyping, Your Worship, and I doubt if that kind of person is not capable of masterminding xenophobic attacks towards foreigners who come into the country.
“Whenever she sees me or my mother she spits on to the ground in front of us and shouts that she does not associate with a family of ladies of loose morals.
“She harasses my whole family and as of now there is a standing protection order that the court granted to my father against her.
“I pray that she should be ordered to stop all those harassments by the law,” Chari begged.
Chatongoza, however, disputed Chari’s claims and told the court that it was the other way round since Chari and her mother were the ones who acted in an unlawful manner whenever they saw her.
“Your Worship, I am old enough to be this girl’s grandmother, but she disrespects me as if I am a toddler. Just because she has joined the army, she thinks she is now allowed to harass and insult anyone.
“She is the one who spits at me when we meet and if people in the gallery were observant enough they would have seen how she and her mother acted when they saw me entering this courtroom.
“They frowned and it was evident that they hate me.
“She badmouths me and tells people that my husband is way younger than I am and says that he is of her age and not mine.
“At one time, however, I had to fight back with words after she had assaulted me.
“I told her that she could not find herself a husband even though she was using skin-lightening creams. I said it to spite her, Your Worship,” she said.
Chatongoza also told the court that she was now in good books with the applicant’s father even though there was a standing protection order between them.
A binding protection order was granted on the two parties as both were barred from disturbing each other’s peace.
