The Utakataka Express frontman succumbed to non-Hodgkin Lymphoma cancer on 15 October last year. The cancer was diagnosed in 2006 and since then Dhewa had been the country’s ambassador in the fight against cancer.
In an interview, Utakataka Express manager Suko Dube said the first anniversary celebrations would be held in Sessombe on Monday.
“The Moyo family is expected to meet in Zhombe on Monday as we celebrate the life of Tongai ‘Dhewa’ Moyo,” he said.
Dube said the Dhewa family was inviting everyone to join them in the celebrations.
“It has not been easy for everyone to cope with the loss of Tongai.
“We are kindly inviting his fans and everyone interested to be part of the proceedings that will be taking place in Sessombe,” he said.
A number of musicians from different corners of the country will perform at the Harare Gardens gala on the 28th of this month meant to commemorate the first anniversary of Dhewa’s death.
“We have invited a number of musicians that are going to be part of the gala. These include Alick Macheso, Progress Chipfumo, Peter Moyo and others,” said Dube.
He said fans should come in their large numbers to celebrate the life of Dhewa through song and dance.
“We are kindly inviting Dhewa’s fans to come in their numbers and celebrate the life of their music icon,” he said.
The band manager added that fans should expect value for their money as the best musicians have been lined up for the gig.
“We have invited the likes of Macheso and First Farai to perform at the show,” he said.
After the death of Dhewa, his group Utakataka Express has remained intact unlike what happens to other bands which disband soon after the death of their leaders.
Peter, known as Young Igwe, has managed to continue from where his father left and already he is working on his latest project that is expected to be on the market before the end of the month.
