LOCAL basketball followers will be in for a treat as teams in the Southern Region Basketball League (SRBL) are gearing up for the much-awaited comeback.
This was revealed by the league’s communications officer, Brighton Musaidzi, who told Zimpapers Sports Hub that they are excited to have managed to bring back the competition.
“We are thrilled to announce our concerted efforts to revive and enhance the basketball scene in Zimbabwe’s Southern Region.
“After a regrettable hiatus last year due to scheduling conflicts with the national elections, we are now dedicated to bringing back the excitement and competitive spirit that defines our league. The SRBL comprises teams from Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo, Midlands and Masvingo,” said Musaidzi.
The teams are Highlanders, Warriors, Legends, Victoria Falls Panthers, Falcons, Wolves, Southern Mavericks, Unicorns and Lakers.
Musaidzi said the league will strengthen competition among teams and also help in grooming quality players.
“Our primary objective is to elevate the standard of basketball within the region, ultimately aiming to bolster our performance at the National Championships. This year’s National Championships underscore the pressing need for increased game time and exposure to high-level competition at regional level.
“It’s evident that our region’s basketball talent is flourishing but sustained growth and development require consistent opportunities for players to showcase their skills and hone their craft. The SRBL serves as a vital platform for nurturing local talent and fostering a culture of excellence within the sport,” he said.
The league, according to Musaidzi, is in need of financial support.
“In the light of this mission, we appeal to corporate entities and potential sponsors to join us in our endeavour to expand and enrich the Southern Region Basketball League.
“Together, we can make a lasting impact on the basketball landscape of Zimbabwe’s Southern Region. Join us as we embark on this exciting journey towards sporting excellence.” – @NkosieLegend
