ZANU-PF shadow legislator for Southerton constituency and founder of the Andrew Makahamadze Foundation, Cde Andrew Makhamadze has appealed to the Government to expedite the rehabilitation of a section of Harare Drive between Willowvale and Glenagles Roads.
Cde Makahamadze said the closure of the strategic link road to pave the way for its rehabilitation is disrupting police operations, hospital access, and community livelihoods.
“This is the access road for the Southerton CID Vehicle Theft Squad, which investigates stolen vehicles and clears vehicles being imported into the country and thoses being exported from the country,” he said.
“The road’s continued closure is affecting accessibility to CID Vehicle Theft Squad, which creates a huge challenge, affecting their ability to verify and stop smuggled vehicles.”
Cde Makahamadze said the road’s closure had also affected ambulance access to hospitals, especially Sally Mugabe Hospital.
“Because of the closure, there is congestion along both Willowvale and Glenagles Roads and ambulance drivers are facing serious challenges in trying to access Sally Mugabe Hospital.
He said the situation has been worsened by commuter omnibus drivers who are now engaging in reckless driving, such as driving against oncoming traffic, causing chaos and confusion.
“It creates serious traffic jams and confusion, showing how strategic that road is for everyday life,” he said.
“We are happy that the road is being attended to and will benefit all of us when done, but we are appealing to Honourable Minister Felix Mhona that is possible the contractor can work even at night so that the road is reopened as soon as possible.
“We want to thank the President for his vision and our Honourable Minister for complementing his efforts, but if they can do more to expedite, it will ease the suffering of the people.”
