SPEAKER of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, is in Italy to participate in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Interfaith Dialogue.

The conference, which kicked off on June 19 and is expected to conclude on June 21, brings together leaders from around the world to foster dialogue and cooperation among diverse faith communities.

This marks the second iteration of the IPU Interfaith Dialogue, following a successful gathering in Marrakech, Morocco, in 2023.

The event is organized by the IPU and the Italian Parliament in cooperation with Religions for Peace, under the theme “Strengthening trust and embracing hope for our common future.”
Adv Mudenda was accompanied by Senator Chief Nechombo, Chairperson of the Thematic Committee on Culture and Heritage, Cde Farai Jere, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture Maureen Kademaunga.

Upon arrival at the Rome International Airport, the Zimbabwean delegation was welcomed by the Zimbabwean Ambassador to Rome, Mrs Mietani Chauke, and officials from the Zimbabwean embassy.
The Parliament of Zimbabwe noted that the country’s commitment to religious pluralism and respect for diverse beliefs is enshrined in its constitution.

Adv Mudenda is poised to highlight significant milestones achieved in promoting religious diversity within Zimbabwe, including the establishment of inclusive policies that encourage interfaith dialogue and community cooperation among various religious groups.

One of the most anticipated events of the conference is a meeting with the newly ordained leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo IV, scheduled to take place on June 21.
This meeting underscores the IPU’s mission to bridge gaps between differing faiths and foster dialogue aimed at cementing religious diversity and tolerance.

The Rome conference is unique in its approach, bringing together speakers of parliaments, members of parliament, and representatives of religions, beliefs, governments, and international organizations.
Participants will build on key recommendations from the Marrakesh Communiqué and other IPU declarations, focusing on promoting peace and inclusivity, upholding the rule of law, and human rights for all.

Adv Mudenda’s participation, according to a statement by the Parliament of Zimbabwe, reflects its active engagement in international relations and its commitment to contributing to global peace efforts.

“In the spirit of the Jubilee Year, the conference will identify forward-looking joint-action points to promote peace and inclusivity, uphold the rule of law and human rights for all, without distinction.”
