Sports Commission to new draft strategic plan

The Commission was operating using a strategic plan adopted in Nyanga five years ago.
Before the end of 2011, the Sports Commission also had a retreat in Kariba where they evaluated the strategic plan.
Joseph Muchechetere, the Sports Commission’s deputy director (sports and development), yesterday said they were set to map a new strategic plan from the indaba set for January 24 in the capital.
“The old strategic plan has since lapsed and we have to come up with a new plan for 2011 to 2016.
“This requires us to have sessions with the national associations and the government.
“The ministry has responded to this by calling for a meeting with all stakeholders to discuss how we can get government support in sport.
“One of the major issues to look for are priority areas,” said Muchechetere.
The seasoned sports administrator said Zimbabweans have to agree on areas they believe have a potential to bring medals from international events.
“We need to agree as a nation on at least five common areas.
“There has to be a shared vision for the priority areas such that when we approach the corporate world they will help.
“This will help us to pool resources in that direction or into those disciplines,” said Muchechetere.
Muchechetere said the principal director in the Ministry of Education, Sports, Arts and Culture was set to chair the meeting to be graced by the chairpersons, secretary-generals and chief executives of national associations.
“We are targeting the leadership of the national sport associations and stakeholders like the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee, the Zimbabwe Paralympic Committee and the Special Olympics.
“We have been looking at national sports strategies from countries like South Africa but it’s after the resolutions at the meeting that we will chart the new course. We could set up a secretariat or come up with committees to develop the strategy towards the priority areas,” said Muchechetere.
