The establishment of a state-of-the-art foot golf course in Mashonaland Central will provide new opportunities for recreation, tourism, and community engagement in the province.
Minister of State for Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Retired Captain Christopher Magomo officiated at the ground-breaking ceremony for the golf course at Stone and Water Resort in Mvurwi on Saturday.
Foot golf is a new sport that can be traced to the Netherlands.
It is a recreational sport combining elements of soccer and golf. The sport is now being played in over 30 countries.
Addressing delegates during the ground-breaking ceremony, Minister Magomo highlighted the centrality of the sport in bolstering the growth of local tourism through hosting international tournaments.
“As we lay the foundation for this course today, we are also laying the groundwork for increased participation in sports, which is vital for fostering a healthy, active, and vibrant society,” said Minister Magomo.
“Foot golf, which combines elements of soccer and golf, is an exciting addition to our sporting landscape, offering new opportunities for recreation, tourism, and community engagement.
“The significance of this ceremony extends beyond just the sport itself; it holds immense value for our district and province. By establishing a foot golf course, we are creating a venue that can attract both local and regional visitors, thereby contributing to tourism and economic growth.”
The foot golf will have professionally maintained grounds, as well as safety features and amenities, which is in line with international standards.
Meanwhile, Stone and Water Resort owner Mr Vitalis Kereke said the province will be the first in the country to get a foot golf course and to host an international tournament.
“I am very confident that the partnership we have with the Foot Golf Association will take this sport to greater heights and contribute towards the promotion of sports and tourism.”
