Hundreds of people in Chitungwiza are reportedly losing cash to unscrupulous middlemen and co-operatives who make them believe that their illegal structures will be spared from demolition. This follows the ongoing exercise to regularise the illegal structures in the dormitory town by the Urban Development Corporation (UDCORP). In an interview last Wednesday, Chitungwiza municipality town clerk Mr George Makunde, said there had been an increase in the construction of illegal structures on undesignated sites.
“We have been receiving information on some people who are demanding cash from the public to have their illegal structures spared from demolitions.
“We want to warn the public to desist from falling for such tricks. They should come to our offices for verification on any issues arising.”
Mr Makunde said some people had started building on undesignated areas after paying the middlemen.
“After people were made to believe that paying these middlemen will spare their structures, they have started building as if those areas had been regularised,” he said. Mr Makunde said neither his council nor UDCORP engaged middlemen as they worked towards restoring order and bringing sanity to the town.
He said council recently approved the Chitungwiza Seke Combination Concept Plan to bring order to the town and confidence to investors.
