Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) director general Elta Nengomasha has said her institution is overwhelmed with the situation obtaining at Zimbabwe Cricket hence an inquiry to establish the root cause of the allegations levelled against the latter by cricket stakeholders is already underway.
Nengomasha however could not divulge the working timelines the SRC have set for the probe, but promised doing everything in the “interest of the nation”.
“When the SRC is doing an investigation, it follows the internal processes of the Commission.
“We are doing this inquiry ensuring that everything is done without any undue process so that everything is done within the interest of the nation.
“At the moment we are inundated with the ZC issue and we will provide the findings of the inquiry once it is done,” Nengomasha said.
This comes after United States based data analyst and lawyer Paidamwoyo Madondo for the second time in a fortnight petitioned the SRC asking for the timeframe they will take to complete the probe.
In his latest petition, Madondo said while he appreciates the seriousness with which the Commission has expressed to undertake the investigation, he queried why the SRC did not specify “the timelines or procedural modalities of the intended investigations”.
He dismissed as incorrect media speculation that his petition was meant to have the ZC suspended or expelled from the International Cricket Council, but was a call to address the challenges at the ZC through meritocracy, fairness and principles of transparency.
“The threshold for ICC suspension or expulsion is governed by its Articles of Association, which require proof of prohibited “government interference” in cricket administration,” said Madondo.
