Steel Makers, SMEs to form partnership

In an interview, the company’s production supervisor Mr Moses Mutapira said they were working hard to establish relationships with SMEs.

“To an extent, we are working really hard to establish the relationship with SMEs as that would guarantee us business and revival of the sector,” he said.

Mr Mutapira said the Government could assist by progressively banning imported goods or set tariffs that protect the local industry.

“We wish Government could assist us by progressively banning imported goods or setting tariffs that protect the local industry.

“Most of these products do not even have readily available spare parts or skilled personnel to take care of and the effect of them flooding our local market has dire consequences such as low profitability for local industries,” said Mr Mutapira.

He also said they had the capacity to manufacture all SMEs’ steel requirements and as such hoped to create strategic alliances with them.

“As a company producing under these turbulent economic times we have the capacity to manufacture all SMEs’ steel requirements. We hope to create synergies and strategic alliances so as to revive the manufacturing and supply sectors,” he said.

Mr Mutapira bemoaned the lack of readily available affordable consumer capital and high utility rates saying they were impacting negatively on the economy and production.

“The lack of readily available affordable consumer capital and high utility rates are a cause for concern as they impact negatively on the economy and production side.

“Due to that, the cost of production becomes high and that is not sustainable for the industry,” said Mr Mutapira.

He said as a result of that people opted for cheaper imported products.

Mr Mutapira also encouraged manufacturers and SMEs to recapitalise so as to meet industrial technological advancement.

“The failure to keep up with industrial technological advancement tends to rob the industry of capacity and efficiency and that generally spells doom for us,” he said.
