Drug abuse is the taking of medicinal drugs or prohibited drugs and substances for the purpose of intoxication.

Medicinal drugs are made to cure certain diseases but if a person takes an overdose of them, he or she is likely to get drunk.

An example of a medicinal drug which is usually abused by people is Broncleer (a cough syrup).

An overdose of this drug causes a person to get drunk.

There are many types of drugs that are abused by people.

For example, marijuana, glue, crystal meth, illicit brews such as zed, double punch and homemade beer.

These drugs are usually abused because they are cheap and easy to get in our communities.

There are many reasons why people abuse drugs.

Some of the reasons are peer pressure, clout and the need to be regarded as heroes at school.

Some pupils take drugs as a way of escaping from unpleasant situations such as poor grades at school.

Still others take them because of lack of support from their parents.

Some pupils take drugs because they wrongly believe that they make them intelligent.

There are many measures that can be adopted to end drug abuse.

The most important measure is to stay away from drugs.

If you were already abusing drugs you can seek guidance and counselling at school or at home.

Another measure is stopping associating with friends who take drugs.

For the betterment of ourselves and our future, we must stop taking drugs to create a drug free generation.
