Huge interest for Tanganda Tea Half Marathon

A RECORD number of athletes has registered for this year’s 21km Tanganda Tea Half Marathon set for Mutare next Sunday.

Although the sponsors’ marketing manager Tsitsi Kumadiro could not readily confirm the exact number of those that will partake in the half marathon, she hinted this year’s edition is set to go down in history as the most subscribed.

Elijah Mabhunu won last year’s race when he outpaced over 300 participants, in 1 hour six minutes, to claim the top gong in the men’s category.

Constance Nyasango romped to victory in the women’s category in 1 hour 18 minutes 26 seconds.

“If there is one area this year’s edition will stand out for is the numbers.

“The interest and registration from participants has been overwhelming and I think this is due to the publicity we have received,” said Kumadiro.

“Acclaimed athletes like Wirimayi Zhuwao, Lionel Muchena and Millian Matende among others have all signalled their intention to participate.

“We have put together a $14 000 purse that will cover the athletes’ price monies. From an organisational point of view, we have done almost everything that has to be done and all we are waiting for is for the gun to signal the beginning of the race,” she said.

The Tanganda Tea Half Marathon is one of the biggest events on the athletics calendar, bringing together school pupils, tertiary education students as well as professionals.

It also has wheelchair categories for both males and females as well as a veterans’ category.
